MSC Certified Fisheries in Iceland
Icelandic Sustainable Fisheries is the owner of fisheries certificates that have been certified according to the MSC standard for catches of cod, haddock, golden redfish, saithe, ling, Greenland halibut, herring, capelin, Atlantic catfish (wolfish), plaice, blue ling, tusk, blue whiting, lemon sole, and shrimp.
Companies that are shareholders in ISF have access to the company’s fisheries certificates and can export or re-sell their products as MSC certified.
Membership in ISF is open to Icelandic companies that wish to export MSC certified seafood products.
ISF's fisheries certificates currently cover twenty species, though the number of certified fishing gears varies for each species.
ISF is owned by companies involved in fishing, processing, and selling seafood products from Iceland, and the company's goal is to increase the number of species holding MSC certified fisheries certificates.
To obtain and maintain fisheries certificates, it is necessary to demonstrate eco-friendly fishing practices, stock health, and responsible, sustainable fisheries management. On a global scale, Icelandic fisheries are at the forefront when measured by sustainable exploitation of fish stocks and respect for the marine ecosystem.
